GALWAY CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT: The Galway Central School District Board of Education will hear a presentation about a potential capital improvement project at its next Board meeting on February 25. The general categories of need to be addressed in the potential capital improvement project include: Health, Safety and Accessibility; Infrastructure; Energy Saving Measures; Community and Stakeholder Input. BENEFIT PASTA DINNER: Harold Thomas, a single father of three boys suffered a massive heart attack on December 14. Harold remains in the hospital and will have a long road ahead of him to recover. Sadly, Harold has incurred a massive amount of medical and household bills. COMMON CORE PUBLIC FORUM: The League of Woman Voters of Saratoga County will hold a Public Forum on the topic of Common Core. This timely topic will be discussed on Saturday, February 27th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Clifton Park Halfmoon Library, Moe Road, Clifton Park. Following a brief presentation on the history of the Common Core concept, a panel of educators will discuss the current situation with Common Core, followed by a discussion of what the future steps will be. SKIDMORE COLLEGE: Social activist Alicia Garza, a founder of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, will deliver the keynote address at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the NY6 LGBTQIA Spectrum Conference at Skidmore College. Outraged by the 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, Garza took to social media to express her anguish and love for the black community. Together with Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors, Garza turned the powerful words “Black Lives Matter” into a social media phenomenon and an organizing network that now boasts more than 26 chapters internationally. Free and open to the public, her talk, titled “Black Lives Matter,” will be in Gannett Auditorium of Palamountain Hall.

WINTER BALL: Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s Junior Committee announces that the theme for its popular Winter Ball event will be “Party of the Century: A Black & Gold Masked Ball.” Inspired by Truman Capote’s infamous 1966 masked Black & White Ball at the Plaza Hotel, the evening will feature a glamorous Red-Carpet entrance with a Prosecco Toast by MJM Imports; hors d’oeuvres by Mazzone Hospitality; drinks by Diageo, PLC and Saratoga Eagle; elegant floral decor by Samantha Nass Floral Design; and live music by Funk Evolution, one of the Capital’s Region’s premier bands. FIX IT: The League of Women Voters of Saratoga County and the New York State Nurses Association present “Fix it: Health Care at the Tipping Point,” 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry Street. This new 55-minute film, made from a business perspective, looks in-depth at how our dysfunctional and inefficient healthcare system damages our economy, suffocates our businesses,discourages physicians, and negatively affects the nation’s health while it remains unaffordable for a third of our citizens. Discussion of the film will be facilitated by Dr. David Ray, Chair, Capital District Chapter, Physicians for a National Health Program, and member, Capital District Alliance for Universal Healthcare. BOOKS FOR TROOPS: Ellen Keegan, director of Books for Troops, announced they will be temporarily suspending the collecting of books at the Halfmoon and Clifton Park sites, as well as the ABC Sports and Fitness and Print Productions sites until further notice because of a huge overflow of books and lack of storage. Books will be going out to the troops at their normal rate of about 30-50 boxes per month, so we ask that you still continue your postage donations at: Books for Troops, 152 Oak Brook Commons, Clifton Park, NY 12065. Volunteer guides provide train passengers with the option to listen to stories about the area’s nature, rich history and cultural sites, including National Parks along and near the train route. Guides are provided with a volunteer uniform, training from National Park Service rangers on subject matter and presentation styles, Amtrak safety protocols, and written materials and electronic resources for further reading. SENSORY-FRIENDLY PLAYTIMES: The World Awareness Children’s Museum, 89 Warren Street, Glens Falls, is proud to launch sensory-friendly hours at its interactive play space on the second Sunday of each month. Sensory-sensitive play time will be held on the following dates: Sunday, March 13, 10 a.m. to noon; Sunday, April 10, 10 a.m. to noon. In order to make the play space more sensory friendly, the Museum staff will dim lights, turn off music, remove batteries from clocks and remove loud devices from select areas. WORLD AWARENESS CHILDREN’S MUSEUM: The World Awareness Children’s Museum presents its newest experience project, Spectral Beauty, open through May 1, 2016. Designed to enhance the inclusiveness of the Museum’s space for children with sensory sensitivities, the exhibition focuses on the beauty that may be found at any point of a spectrum, through any perspective. Spectral Beauty features artwork from children living with an autism spectrum disorder, including some local artists. Spectral Beauty workshops will be held throughout the exhibit, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays and Saturdays. The museum will also host sensory sensitive days in the Museum, with less sound and low lights. SHELTERS OF SARATOGA ADULT DROP-IN CENTER: Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., 20 Walworth Street, Saratoga Springs. FIND YOUR PARK: As the National Park Service begins a year-long celebration of its 100th anniversary in 2016, you are heartily invited to come “Find Your Park” at Saratoga National Historical Park throughout the upcoming winter. The park’s visitor center, located on Route 32 and 4 in Stillwater, remains open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily all winter, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day and offers a film, exhibits, fiber optic map, ranger programs, museum store and a kid’s corner where children can try on soldier’s coats or play in a soldier’s tent. The scenic tour road will close to vehicular traffic after December 1, but remains open from sunrise to sunset for walking and biking (when conditions allow), as do the park’s 10+ miles of hiking trails for walking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. New this year will be a special pilot project to groom ski trails, so be sure to stop at the visitor center for a trail map. There are no entrance fees between November and April 30. 4-H DOG CLUB: Saratoga County 4-H has established a new 4-H club that will focus on dogs. Different from the 8-week dog obedience course, this club will meet year-round and will focus on a variety of dog-related topics such as breeds, care, conformation, obedience, nutrition, field-trips, projects, and more. CHATFIELD MUSEUM: The Town of Greenfield Historical Society announces the opening of the Chatfield Museum of Greenfield History in the IOOF Hall at the corner of Middle Grove Road and Lake Desolation Road. RODION CANTACUZENE SCHOLARSHIP: The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame has initiated the Rodion Cantacuzene Scholarship, an annual award recognizing young leaders and volunteers throughout Saratoga County. The scholarship, awarded in a one-time amount of $1,000, will be presented each June to a high school senior from Saratoga County who has demonstrated a record of academic excellence and exemplary service to the community along with a strong interest in pursuing future studies in history and/or the arts. SAT PREP CLASSES: Saratoga Springs High School will offer a 12-session SAT Preparation Course beginning Thursday, March 17, for Saratoga juniors preparing for the SAT exam. ALMA THOMAS EXHIBITION: The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College will premiere Alma Thomas beginning February 6, 2016. Alma Thomas (1891-1978) focused on her artistic career after retiring as a school teacher at the age of 69. Her own highly personal style expanded upon traditional Abstract Expressionist or Washington Color School practices, and was developed through experimentation with abstraction, color, line, and pattern. Examining the artistic evolution of Thomas, the exhibition will feature works from every period in her career, including rarely exhibited watercolors and early abstractions, as well as her signature canvases drawn from a variety of private and public collections. The exhibition is organized by the Tang Teaching Museum and The Studio Museum in Harlem. The show will be on view through June 5, at the Tang before traveling to The Studio Museum July 14 to October 30.

BERKSHIRE BANK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Berkshire Bank has announced it will honor 30 high school seniors in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Vermont for their volunteer service through their foundation’s annual Scholarship Awards Program. The program will award $45,000 in total scholarship dollars to students who have exemplified community service through their volunteer efforts, have succeeded academically, demonstrate a financial need, and attend a high school located in a county with a Berkshire Bank office. UALBANY SOFTBALL: The University at Albany’s annual winter hitting and pitching clinics are designed for players aged 8 to 17 of all skill levels. Through a series of drills and techniques, the goal is to provide a solid skill foundation for younger players and increase the level of play for advanced players. There will be a 1:2 instructor to athlete ratio in the hitting sessions and a 1:3 ratio for the pitchers. Clinics will be held at the University at Albany Gyms and Bubble on Sunday, February 7. GORILLA BASKETBALL/SOCCER: Get ready for another exciting season of fun-filled Gorilla Basketball & Gorilla Soccer programs. 20 FOR 20 CAMPAIGN: The Ballston Spa Education Foundation (BSEF) is celebrating its 20th anniversary by unveiling its “20 for 20” Campaign. The campaign has a goal to raise and award up to $20,000 in teacher-initiated grants during the 2015-16 school year. To reach this goal, the BSEF is raffling a trip for two to Tuscany, Italy. The winning ticket includes: Five nights at a Tuscan villa with daily breakfast; Airfare for two (up to $1000 per ticket); Airport transfers to/from the villa; Welcome dinner for 2 at the villa; Cooking class for 2; Walking tour of Florence with admission to the Accademia; Train tickets to/from villa to Florence city center; Full day guided tour of Siena and San Gimignano with a winery visit. Tickets are $35 per ticket or $100 for a set of 4. All proceeds will fund the grants that will be awarded to the Ballston Spa Central School District. “NO PLACE TO HIDE” EXHIBIT: The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery is pleased to announce the new exhibition, “No Place to Hide.” Once the realm of the totalitarian state, surveillance technologies are now exploited by many democratic governments and private businesses to collect, store, analyze, profile, share, and sell vast quantities of personal information. What implications does all this have on life in contemporary society? What are the consequences for those increasingly finding themselves to be “under control”? “No Place to Hide” brings together three contemporary artists – Hasan Elahi, Addie Wagenknecht and Aaron Zinman – who all address the impact of “being watched.” Their works ask us to consider the myriad ways in which we are all under surveillance, the potential ramifications of this data collection, and how our daily electronic interactions contribute to the growing collection of personal information about us. The exhibition will be open through Sunday, February 21, 2016.
